In simple terms, vermicomposting is the process of using worms, like red wigglers (Eisenia fetida), to break down organic matter. These hardworking creatures devour everything from kitchen scraps to yard waste, turning it into valuable worm castings that boost plant growth and soil health.
It's a cool way to teach the kids about vermicomposting and how every little bit counts when it comes to sustainability and reducing waste.
Our schools have fully embraced vermicomposting, integrating it into our curriculum and daily activities. Each location hosts dedicated worm bins, where students and staff work together to care for these eco-heroes. This season, our worms were replenished from Uncle Jim’s Worm Farm, ensuring a healthy and vibrant worm population.
Through hands-on experiences like replenishing worm bedding, our students gain a firsthand understanding of the natural processes at play and the importance of waste reduction.
But vermicomposting isn't just about education—it's also highly practical. Worm bins can be kept indoors, making them accessible even in urban settings. Plus, the nutrient-rich vermicompost they produce is a fantastic organic fertilizer, perfect for gardens, houseplants, and crops.
